The beauty of Bhangra.me is that we find so many hidden treasures. The first picture is of Vancouver Bhangra pioneer Balbir Bains who was a member of the Punjab Cultural Association. PCA travelled all over Canada and Washington during the 1970’s and 1980’s before transforming into the present day PAAR Club.
The second picture is one I’ve always heard about but now I’ve finally seen it! This popular skit was one of the final performances by the original members of PCA and their “retirement” dance featured them sporting fake beards. But as you know, the love for Bhangra never dies!

Without a doubt one of the most distinctive features of Vancouver’s Bhangra scene is the early history of female Bhangra dancers. Going all the way back to the mid-1970’s with the Khalsa Dancers, to PAAR Club, to the first all women’s Bhangra teams of Simon Fraser University and the UBC Girlz, this rich tradition is integral to the Bhangra.me Exhibit. This excerpt outlines the different contours to the debate around gender and Bhangra.
